Thailand may build Internet data centers

In order to expand computing infrastructure and e-government services, Thailand’s prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra supports the idea of building Internet data centers around the country, reports the Bangkok Post.

Yingluck’s background in the telecom industry may be a driving force behind this concept.

Internet data centers could serve as locations that accommodate smart card technology and help citizens with their smart ID card. The smart ID card was a project of Thaksin Shinawatra, deposed prime minister and brother to Yingluck.

The state telecom company CAT Telecom supports the Internet data centers, and has spent 265 million baht to expand its facility to add shared web hosting, servers and other services.
